Sofa Cleaning on Route de l'Ourika, Marrakech

Out in the valley, a textile's problem is almost never a stain. It is a smell that returns every winter, and a ring no one can say when it appeared.

In short

On the Route de l'Ourika, near Marrakech, EPUREVA cleans L-shaped and U-shaped sofas, mattresses and rugs at home in country houses, treating the humidity held in the foam rather than just removing surface stains. An L-shaped sofa costs 550 MAD incl. VAT in the small format and 600 MAD in the large, a U-shaped sofa 650 or 750 MAD; a rug is charged at 30 MAD per m², and the textile minimum is 400 MAD per visit. These amounts are indicative and are confirmed after photos or a visit.

The valley has winters, and the textile remembers them

The cliché has it that Marrakech is dry all year round. On the Route de l'Ourika, that is wrong for a good part of the winter: nights are cold, the temperature contrast between day and night is sharp, and morning humidity settles everywhere, including inside lightly heated houses.

A country house is not occupied continuously and is rarely heated continuously either. The spaces are large, the walls thick, the rooms cool. In these conditions, a sofa's foam or the depth of a mattress behaves like a slow sponge: it absorbs the air's humidity over weeks, never fully drying out.

Three signs follow, always the same. A musty smell that rises when you sit down and fades when a window is opened. Damp rings on the base of the seats and on the faces against the wall. And, in advanced cases, spots of mould on the underside of a cushion or beneath the sofa, where no one looks.

A damp ring is not a stain

This distinction drives the whole treatment, and it is not widely understood.

A stain is a foreign substance deposited on or in the fibre: it has an outline, an origin, and it comes out with pre-treatment then extraction. A damp ring is not a deposit from outside: it is a migration.

Water held in the foam rises to the surface as it dries, carrying with it the salts, adhesives and residues already present in the foam and the frame's timber. It deposits in a ring, with a darker edge and a paler centre.

The practical consequence: treating a ring like a stain brings it back. The visible circle is cleaned, the foam is re-wetted, and a new ring appears a week later, slightly wider. That is the classic mistake.

The right approach is to treat the whole panel with a minimal water volume, then sanitise and dry the foam instead of loading it further. It is slower, less dramatic, and it is the only way to get a result that holds until spring. Method details for stain removal are on our stains and odours page.

Sanitising the foam, not just washing the fabric

On these houses, the job is organised in a sequence that is not the one used for a city sofa.

  1. Mechanical dusting and brushing, cushions turned over, undersides inspected. This is when early signs of mould are caught, before any water is applied.
  2. Sanitising treatment of the foam, targeted on the zones where humidity settles — base of the seat, faces against the wall, underside of the sofa.
  3. Extraction with a contained water volume, panel by panel, never saturating a thick foam.
  4. Dry passes and assisted drying, with the room closed if outside air is damp, open if it is drier than the inside. That call is made on site, not from a quotation.
  5. Repositioning and checking the underside of the cushions before we leave.

Drying then takes half a day to a full day, sometimes longer depending on the fabric, the thickness and the airflow; in a cool, lightly heated house, plan for the upper end of that range.

The sofa is neither used nor covered until it is completely dry. Our price list only covers L-shaped and U-shaped sofas: covered-terrace cushions, benches and any other kind of seating are priced from photos, via WhatsApp.

What we refuse to treat, and what the job costs

Mould is diagnosed before it is cleaned. As long as it has only reached the cover, it can be treated. Once it has colonised the foam, cleaning alone is not enough: the structure is affected, the spores are throughout the thickness, the smell returns within days and the treatment would amount to selling a temporary reprieve.

We say so from a photo, before travelling, and point towards replacing the foam or the cover, which is not our trade.

Distance shapes the rest. We only come once: the number and format of the pieces, the rug dimensions, vehicle access and the possibility of turning around are checked before we set off, from your photos. Water and electricity must be available in the house: without them, we cannot do the job. We bring the equipment and the products.

The amounts in the grid below are in dirhams incl. VAT; they are indicative, confirmed after photos or a visit, and no extra is committed without your agreement. A smell or a ring you report does not trigger an automatic surcharge: it helps us prepare the method.

For a house in the valley, a large U-shaped sofa (750 MAD) and two double mattresses (2 × 400 MAD, i.e. 800 MAD) come to 1,550 MAD incl. VAT; the 400 MAD textile minimum is exceeded, so nothing is added.

Grouping every piece on the same visit is what stops a single item being topped up to the minimum. Some stains, discolouration or smells may remain: no 100% result is guaranteed.

Our other services on this road are on our Route de l'Ourika page; sofa formats and their limits are detailed on our sofa cleaning page, and the whole sector on upholstery cleaning carried out on site.

Frequently asked questions

Our lounge smells musty every winter — does one clean solve the problem?

It does if the smell comes from organic matter and humidity held in the foam, which is the most common case in the valley.

The treatment combines targeted sanitising of the zones where humidity settles with extraction at a contained water volume, followed by assisted drying; a smell you report brings no automatic surcharge. If it comes from foam that is deeply mouldy, cleaning alone will not be enough, and we say so before travelling.

Does a ring on the base of a seat come out with cleaning?

Yes, but not treated like a stain. A ring is a migration of salts and residues that have risen from the foam as it dried, not a deposit from outside. Treating it in a circle brings it back wider a week later. We treat the whole panel with a minimal water volume, then dry the foam out instead of loading it again. It is less dramatic, and it holds.

In winter, how long does a sofa take to dry in a house in the valley?

Allow half a day to a full day, sometimes longer: the fabric, the foam thickness and the airflow decide, and a cool, lightly heated house dries more slowly than a city flat. Until it is completely dry, nobody sits on the sofa and nothing covers it, neither a throw nor a dust cover. The exact timing is given to you according to the method chosen.

What do you do if the foam of a sofa in the house is deeply mouldy?

We start with a diagnosis from photos. When mould has colonised the thickness of the foam and not just the cover, cleaning alone is not enough: the smell returns within days. We tell you so before any visit and point towards replacing the foam or the cover, which is not our trade. The other pieces in the house can be treated normally.
